My company is currently using Maximo 5.2 and thinking that we might like to upgrade to Maximo 7.1.  I have been looking online and see that the latest version is now at 7.5.  So my first question is should we go with 7.1 or get the latest and greatest 7.5?

The next thing is I don't have much experience with Maximo and I will be handling this project.  From reading online it appears to upgrade from 5.2 we would have to upgrade to 6,6.1,6.2, then finally to 7.1.  As a newbie, I'm wondering if it would just be easier to do a fresh install of 7.1 or 7.5?

Since I've never done this before, I was wondering if someone might be able to fill me in on what all is involved in just doing a fresh install.  It seems that might be easier.  Is it as simple as getting the software and loading it?

What are other things we should be thinking about before this upgrade?  Example, server upgrade, memory upgrade, etc.

Sorry for being so clueless but I would appreciate any helpful comments.

Thanks

If you only have a small amount of data, and it is pretty easy to manually export then import data into the new database. Installing a fresh system is a good choice.

Upgrading the system requires many steps from this specific version to that specific version, each of which may involve many verification/investigation/issue fixing steps. It could be an extremely frustrating experience, especially for someone with less experience about the software.

If you must go this path, you would be better off hiring an experienced consultant to do the job for you than doing it yourself.

Installation/Upgrade process is resource intensive. If your server is quite old, you might want to borrow some RAM somewhere else just for the smooth installation. To install 7.1, 4GB RAM will work. To install Maximo 7.5 on a 64bit environment, I suggest you to have at least 8GB RAM.

Hi...below are the steps to perform Maximo up gradation from 5 to 7.2...see whether it is useful  or not.....

MAXIMO  UPGRADATION FROM  5 TO 7

•   We cannot upgrade maximo 5 directly to maximo 7. First we need to upgrade Maximo 5 to Maximo 6 and once it is completed then we need to upgrade from Maximo 6 to Maximp 7.

Below are the steps for upgrading Maximo 5 to 6

•   Intially we need to create database and we need to import the DMP file in it.(Before importing the DMP file we need to run the user scripts that are provided in the folder)
•   Once the backupfile is imported, we need to change the properties file in the maximo 6 so that it is connected to the database that we have created.

               mxe.db.url=jdbc:oracle:thin:@192.168.2.108:1521:orcl

since we are using ORACLE thats the reason we have provided Oracle driver and ORCL1 is   the name of the database the we have created and the IP address is the place we are the dump (.DMP File)  is located.
•   Once the database is ready we need to execute the upgradeui.bat file which is located at C:\maximodev\tools\maximo

NOTE:  Check whether the database connection is succeeded or not.

•   In this , we will come across three main steps. One is CHECK INTEGITY,other is VALIDATE and the last one is UPGRADE

•   Once we have run Check Integrity, we will come across error which can be seen in the log. So we need to rectify those errors by writing scripts.

•   Once the Check Integrity is passed we need to move on to the VALIDATE and UPGRADE steps.

NOTE: In UPGRADE, we must execute all the script once at a time.
After we have passed all the three steps we have done with the upgradation of maximo 5 to 6.By following the above steps we need to upgrade Maximo 6 to Maximo 7.
