I had a user "COMP" a list of workorders by accident. Is there a trick to change them back to "INPRG"?

Not through the front-end I don't think. You can try changing the status of these WOs using SQL on the back-end. Just make sure you backup your database first. There are at least couple of tables which you need to update, i.e., workorder and wostatus. Not really sure whether they will be others.
