We have a test installation of Maximo 7 and I'm trying to figure out it's capabilities.  Some of the complaints on our current Purchasing system is that the description fields are too small and the long description is not searchable.

Is the item long description searchable and more importantly, can it be printed on the purchase order?

Thanks!

long description is a seperate table known as longdescription in Maximo. unfortunately to my knowledge this field is not searchable because in maximo only parent object fields are searchable. thought for convenience you can increase the length of description (also known as short description field) in PO so they can enter some more data in there..

As for printability is concerned Yes its printable provided you use proper joins in the table.

The long description is searchable if you have access to the WHERE clause. This can be found on the advanced search tab from the inventory list screen. The WHERE clause to get you to the long description requires a 3 table join. Below is a sample that will search the long description. By changing test to the phrase your will be looking for, you will be searching for your phrase anywhere in the long description.

WHERE inventory.itemnum IN (SELECT itemnum FROM item WHERE itemid  IN (SELECT ldkey FROM longdescription WHERE ownertable=’item’ AND ldtext like ‘%test%’))

I put the Long Description field in Advanced Search and can search that way.
